A role-playing game (RPG; often roleplaying game) is a game in which the participants assume the roles of fictional characters.[1] Participants determine the actions of their characters based on their characterization,[1] and the actions succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines.[2] Within the rules, players have the freedom to improvise; their choices shape the direction and outcome of the game.[2]
Now, technically, this is all right. However, we've stretched the idea of RPing these days into the world of our imagination... they can be HP, Twilight, LOTR, Star Wars, based of a TV show or a movie, or just plain made up. It doesn't matter what it is as log as you understand what you're supposed to do.
Let's say my name was Mary Sue. The person I'm RPing with's name is Bobby Kack.
Mary Sue: She walked into the room and unexpectedly found Bobby Kack.
"What a surprise, Bobby Kack! What are you doin' back in town!" she exclaimed in her thickly hinted southern accented voice. He was sitting at te kitchen table, scarfing down a brownie.
Bobby Kack: "Mary Sue, is that you! My MY how you've grown! You 'member the last time we talked?" He began enthusiastically but his tone at the end changed. They both knew the other was thinking of the incident that separated them last.
Mary Sue: She fumbled with her dress, not wanting to talk about it. "Bobby Kack... don't bring up those memories..."
Bobby Kack: AN ALIEN CAME IN AND SHOT THEM.
...
Now, this was all good up until the last think Bobby Kack wrote. This is called God-Modding, or g-modding for short. It is when one person without the permission of the other randomly does something for the both of them. It's annoying and a bit rude, unless it's something as simple as Mary Sue's 'he was scarfing a brownie'. None of this, 'ya hear?!
Alright, now I hope you understand the concept. Mary Sue and Bobby Kack wish you a wonderful RPing experience.
